Deborah K. Herman Named to Board of Directors of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank

Commack, NY - Deborah K. Herman, publisher of Building Long Island  magazine, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Long Island Cares Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank.  Ms. Herman, the founder and president of DKH Communications Inc, a magazine and custom publishing company,   publishes the real estate and economic development magazine, whose mission is to provide Long Island’s construction, real estate, and architecture communities with a broad perspective on the region’s development, along with viewpoints and insights on leaders and trends.

Central to the magazine's mission is an ongoing commitment to raising awareness and funds for local charities. Ever since launching in 2006, each issue of Building Long Island showcases a worthy Long Island-based nonprofit, chosen by the industry professional whose work is spotlighted in the same issue. Nonprofits that have received this recognition include the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, The American Heart Association, Hope House Ministry, Long Island Children’s Museum, Sunrise Day Camp, and the Dowling College Scholarship Fund.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the Harry Chapin Food Bank to help diminish hunger on Long Island and to extend Building Long Island’s commitment to making this a better place for all of us to live,” Ms. Herman commented.

Ms. Herman is also active in the community.  She serves as the Chair of the Marketing Committee for Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy’s Economic Development Consortium. She is an annual presenter at the Fair Media Council’s Connection Day. She is a proud member of the Women Economic Developers of Long Island and an advisory board member of CoreNet Global’s Long Island chapter.  Her support extends to industry associations across Long Island, including  Action Long Island, CIBS (Commercial Industrial Brokers Society), LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action), LIREG (Long Island Real Estate Group) and SMPS (Society of Marketing Professional Services).

Ms. Herman was named an Honoree of the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Women of the Year. She received the honor at the organization’s annual Golf Classic, an event which recognizes and honors women who have demonstrated the strength and determination it takes to be a leader, in business and in life.

She lives in Commack with her daughter, Michelle.

Denise Pursley Honored by American Cancer Society

Denise D. Pursley was named an Honoree of the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Women of the Year. Ms. Pursley received the honor at the organization’s annual Golf Classic, an event which recognizes and honors women who have demonstrated the strength and determination it takes to be a leader, in business and in life.

Ms. Pursley is the managing partner of the Long Island office of the International law firm Nixon Peabody LLP and is a partner in the real estate department. She has developed a national real estate practice and regularly counsels clients on all aspects of real estate, environmental, finance, and land-use law, with particular emphasis on commercial leasing, acquisition and disposition, mergers and acquisitions, energy and environmental matters.

Ms. Pursley is also active in the community. She is the general counsel of the Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. (“LIHP”), a nationally recognized non-profit corporation facilitating the development of affordable and workforce housing on Long Island, In addition to WEDLI she is also an active member of several national and local organizations including CoreNet Global, the International Council of Shopping Centers (“ICSC”), the Association for a Better Long Island (“ABLI”) and the Regional Plan Association (“RPA”). Ms. Pursley has previously served as the Chairperson of the Environmental Law Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association and is a member of the New York and Florida State Bar Associations.

THERESA AHLSTROM HONORED BY CATHOLIC CHARITIES

Hicksville, NY - September 27, 2006 — Catholic Charities, Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that its 4th Annual Golf Classic held at the Huntington Crescent Club on September 25th raised over $195,000.  The total surpassed the amount raised at last year’s outing.  Proceeds will fund Catholic Charities’ human service programs here on Long Island.    

An impressive 166 golfers participated in the outing honoring Theresa P. Ahlstrom, Managing Partner of KPMG’s Long Island office.  Leaders from a wide range of Long Island’s business sectors turned out to recognize her unique contributions to nonprofits in the region and to support the work of Catholic Charities.

Ms. Ahlstrom is a long-time supporter and volunteer with Catholic Charities, having offered her expertise through years of service both as a board trustee and as a member of several committees.  She graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. from St. John’s University in 1983 and in addition to more than 15 years of service to Catholic Charities, she is involved in numerous other community activities.  They include the Long Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Women Economic Developers of Long Island, and an advisory board to St. John’s Tobin College of Business Accounting Program. 
 “It’s a privilege to honor Theresa today,” said Laura A. Cassell, Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities.  “She’s a devoted wife and mother, a successful business leader, and all the while, she remains a pillar of support for our community.  She sets an extraordinary example for us all and she personifies the spirit of Catholic Charities.”

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Rockville Centre, provides Care With Dignity...Life With Hope to the poor, isolated, vulnerable, and disadvantaged on Long Island. Founded in 1957, the agency provides a full range of services and operates out of more than 60 sites.  In 2005, in partnership with more than 100 local parishes, Catholic Charities served 59,733 Long Islanders.

ERICA GARAY MAKES PRESENTATION TO PLI INSTITUTE ON COMPUTER AND INTERNET LAW

Erica Garay, litigation attorney and member in the law firm of Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. (Mineola, NY) was called upon to make a presentation on "Enforcing Confidentiality and Non-Compete Agreements" at the PLI (Practicing law Institute - New York, NY) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 during their 26th Annual Institute on Computer & Internet Law.

Ms. Garay is a frequent lecturer/presenter and has also presented at the New York State Judicial Institute at Pace University School of Law on trade secret and restrictive covenant litigation. Actively involved and committed to the community, Ms. Garay also finds time to serve on the Board of Directors of FOTA (Friends Of The Arts), Board Member of the LIWA (Long Island's Women's Agenda) and has volunteered for Half Hollow Hills High School's "Job Shadow Day".

CAROL C. MARKMAN NAMED TREASURER OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Syosset, NY...March 1, 2006.. Carol C. Markman, a CPA and partner at the Syosset accounting firm Feldman, Meinberg & Company, LLP was recently named Treasurer of the Executive Board of Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC). She has served on the Board since September 2004.

Humanitarian of the Year Award

On Wednesday, November 9, 2005, Kennetha Pettus received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Institute of Real Estate Management of Greater New York (IREM), for her dedication to helping others.

Kennetha a WEDLI board member and co-chair of the Hospitality Committee is an Accredited Realty Manager and a certified Property Manager candidate.
